Career Opportunities. Roberto Bonelli. PhD students and postdocs met for a night of networking and knowledge sharing. The event was the second in our Contemporary Alumni series, a careers and business-focused program for former and current Institute staff and students. Alumni relations manager Dr Erika Cretney said students and postdocs were paired up according to career interests. Dr Cretney said alumni enjoyed sharing their knowledge and meeting such talented, enthusiastic young scientists. The reality however, is that SSP is a leadership development programme. Given that all our Scholars are high academic achievers, the challenge that our Scholars often experience is trying match their academic achievements and interests, to a possible career path.
At the moment, our scholars have the option of; Googling information on careers, speaking to career guidance counselors, attending university roadshows, job shadowing or taking an aptitude test. Seldom do they have the chance to spend one-on-one time with professionals from various industries, and to hear from the horse’s mouth about what it is that you do, what did you study, how did you get to where you are now and what advice you have to offer.
Year 9 Career Speed dating
A change was made to the annual career speed dating event for Year 9 students this year when the school got an offer from the NZ Rural General Practice Network to bring 10 university students to our school. These students are studying courses ranging from optometry, dentistry, nursing and medicine. After a short presentation about the wide range of health careers and the support students from rural schools can expect to receive to make it possible for them to go into any health career.
The aim of the initiative is to get more students thinking about health careers and coming back to their own communities to work in them. After the presentation the university students set up five interactive activities which the school students participated in.

Careers Speed Dating Event
A change was made to the annual career speed dating event for Year 9 students this year when the school got an offer from the NZ Rural General Practice.
In this way, businesses have direct access to excellent candidates and prospective colleagues for the fourth consecutive year, and students are given the opportunity to gain the experience of a job interview, introduce themselves to employers, meet prospective industry colleagues, and gain information about job opportunities and future career development. Each student had eight minutes to present themselves to the company as best as they could and to discover whether there was chemistry between them.
After each interview, students evaluated the employers and commented on the impression the employer left, while the employers did the same for the students they spoke with. It was a night to remember! KI students and alumni came together on Tuesday the 24 th of April to discuss careers beyond academia. Alumni from different sectors — pharmaceuticals, finance, consulting, health informatics, and marketing — rotated around students in sets of 10 minutes, during an event inspired by the concept of speed dating. The result was a lecture hall buzzing with conversation. Here is a distillation of some of the themes that cropped up.

Networking can be one of the most powerful and productive activities an individual can do to launch and manage their career. In the workplace today, we need to be known to others as well as ensure that others are aware of how we might be a resource for them. Whether student, young careerist, or seasoned professional, having a network of people you can tap into for information, advice and opportunities, while sharing your own, is paramount.
A speed networking event helped youngsters in South Tyneside map out their future careers.
The STEM Slam, she said, began with a challenge, which created an opportunity, which became an event. It applies to academic disciplines, as well as to companies in those fields. Or they can be larger, established companies not known for their STEM positions. When they do have jobs, they may not have a chance to get together with student prospects. So there was opportunity, but there was a matter of logistics.
Groups of four companies spent a total of 20 minutes in each room; the students could divide their time among as many of the companies as they wished. The company has developed modern, mobile technology to streamline the electronic data capture of documents used in clinical trials. Non-STEM majors represented at the event included art, theatre, psychology and communication.
